- Rolling Stone reveals how U.S. troops murdered Afghan civilians
- Soldiers cut off 15-year-old boy's finger and kept it as trophies
- Video captures U.S. troops cheering as airstrike kills two Afghan civilians
Shocking new details emerged today of how American soldiers formed a 'death squad' to randomly murder Afghan civilians and mutilate their corpses.
An investigation by Rolling Stone magazine details how senior officers failed to stop troops killing Afghans and keeping their body parts as trophies.
In one horrific episode, the magazine claims troops chopped off a dead Afghan boy's finger and later used it as 'gambling chip' in a game of cards.
The damning dossier is likely to prove to be highly damaging for the Army still reeling from last week's revelations about the brutal acts of violence carried out by the notorious 'death squad'.
Horror: A video released by Rolling Stone magazine shows an incident in which two Afghans on a motorcycle are gunned down
Heart of darkness: Video shows American troops seeking out Afghan civilians who were killed 'for sport'
The investigation by Rolling Stone also revealed how:
- Troops shot dead civilians and tried to cover their tracks;
- U.S. soldiers hacked off part of a dead man's skull;
- Soldiers cheered as they filmed a U.S. airstrike blowing up two Afghan civilians;
- A video showed two Afghans on a motorcycle being gunned down.
The magazine claims the men hacked off bits of skull from their victims and kept them as trophies of their kills.
The soldiers are also accused of opening fire on civilians for no reason and covering up their attacks by planting guns and magazine on their victims.
The magazine claims that amongst the accused 'killing innocent Afghan civilians became less a reason for concern than a cause for celebration’.
Last week Army Specialist Jeremy Morlock, 23, admitted his part in the twisted scheme and was jailed for 24 years.
The remaining four soldiers who are due to be court-martialled are Sergeant Calvin Gibbs - who is accused of being the ringleader - Specialist Adam C. Winfield, Specialist Michael S. Wagnon II and Private first class Andrew H. Holmes.
They were all part of the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, of the 2nd Infantry Division, who carried out at least four executions in Kandahar province between January and May this year.
According to Rolling Stone the men joked for weeks about killing ‘savages’ before finally murdering a boy of around 15 in a farming village, their first kill.
To cover their tracks they threw a grenade in his direction to make it look like they had come under attack.
But with his body on the floor events took an even more sinister turn as Gibbs started ‘messing around with the kid', moving his arms and mouth and ‘acting like the kid was talking'.
He then supposedly took a pair of medic’s scissors and snipped off the boy’s pinky finger and handed it to Holmes as a trophy for his first kill in Afghanistan.
Rolling Stone claims Holmes carried it around in a zip-lock bag.
‘He wanted to keep the finger forever and wanted to dry it out,’ a friend said later. ‘He was proud of his finger.’
Later that night Morlock and Holmes were playing a game of cards and, when it came time for their wager, they supposedly said they would bet the finger.
A female medic who was watching walked away in disgust.
Gruesome: The photos which sparked the trial were published in Der Spiegel magazine's March 21 issue
The Rolling Stone article talks in detail about how the soldiers felt invincible and emboldened by the lack of policing by their superiors.
It also details a serious of disturbing videos and pictures of the victims taken by the men - one shows a hand with a missing finger, another depicts a severed head on a stick and others show blown up legs.
In two cases soldiers pose over the bodies of their victims as if they are hunting trophies.
The men also made videos including one which was filmed on Sept 12, 2009.
It shows infra-red camera footage of two Afghans putting what could have been an improvised explosive device in the ground ahead of the soldiers.
Regardless of whether or not it is an IED, filming at such a time is a clear breach of Army rules.
They also edited it down, added a soundtrack and gave it a chilling name - ‘Death Zone’.
In a further breach of regulations the soldiers videoed themselves in combat in Afghanistan and passed around the footage to each other on USB sticks.
Footage to loud rock music shows the moment two Afghans were blown up by an air strike - filmed by by U.S. soldiers, who videoed themselves in combat in Afghanistan and passed around the footage to each other
The footage was published by Rolling Stone magazine in its coverage of the five American soldiers accused of being part of a 'Kill Squad' which murdered innocent Afghan civilians for sport
Rolling Stone has for the first time published the videos which were supposedly passed around by the men of 5th Stryker Combat Brigade as they carried out their executions in Kandahar province.
In the first clip the men can clearly be heard joking: ‘They’re going to f****** die’ and ‘You don’t f*** with us’.
As the airstrike starts so does the song ‘En Vie’ by Apocalyptica, a cello rock band from Helsinki.
One of the men is killed instantly but the second runs off and is caught by another volley of explosions - as the men whoop and cheer ‘F*** yeah!’
A title card called ‘Aftermath’ comes on screen followed by close-up colour images of the men’s bloodied bodies with horrific close-ups on their injuries.
The credits then roll explaining how ‘Shadow PLT’ was behind the picture and that a Sergeant Michael Schweitzer did the editing.
According to Rolling Stone the men would pass the gruesome videos around on USB sticks and hard drives.
They would file them on their personal computers alongside clips of TV shows, Ultimate Fighting fights and films such as Iron Man 2.
A second video released by the magazine shows a separate incident in which two Afghans on a motorcycle are gunned down.
Although not apparently as disturbing as the first, it nonetheless shows a total disregard for combat rules.
Second clip: The video is less disturbing than the first but it still shows a total disregard for combat rules
‘Even if the killings were part of a legitimate combat engagement it is a clear violation of Army standards to share such footage,’ Rolling Stone says.
‘The video was taken on patrol with a helmet-mounted camera; at one point, the soldier shooting the images can be heard boasting: "I got it all on camera".'
The U.S. Army has been keen to paint the men involved as if they were working alone but the article claims that internal records show the ‘Kill team’ was ‘operating out in the open, in ‘plain view of the rest of the company’.
Specialist Jeremy Morlock, left, has already admitted his part in the scheme and was jailed for 24 years - with Andrew Holmes, centre, and Adam Winfield, right, among four others to be court-martialed at a later date
‘Far from being clandestine, as the Pentagon has implied, the murders of civilians were common knowledge among the unit and understood to be illegal by "pretty much the whole platoon",' it says.
The revelations have been a PR disaster for the U.S. Army and is the most serious prosecution of alleged U.S. military atrocities during 10 years of war in Afghanistan.
The existence of the photos and videos, among dozens seized as evidence by investigators and ordered sealed from public view by the Army, has drawn comparisons with pictures of Iraqi prisoners taken by U.S. military personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2004.
The remaining four soldiers who are due to be court-martialed are Sergeant Calvin Gibbs - who is accused of being the ringleader - Specialist Adam C. Winfield, Specialist Michael S. Wagnon II and Private first class Andrew H. Holmes.
Seven other members of the combat unit were charged with lesser crimes during the investigation, which grew out of a probe into hashish abuse by American GIs.
Four of those men already have pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

'lucky bridge'
Chinese wall of humanity: Incredible sight as 200,000 file over 'lucky bridge' to wish for health and happiness
Last updated at 2:20 PM on 25th March 2011
This is the moment hundreds of thousands of festival goers took to the Taiping Bridge in South-Western China as part of a traditional ‘bridge-treading’ event.
The event in Jushui Township, Sichuan Province, saw local residents walk along the bridge to pray for their families on the day of the Spring Sacrificial Rites.
Around 200,000 participants gathered at the ancient Taiping Bridge to throw old clothes and coins into the water to bring them luck.
Health and happiness: Local residents in China's Sichuan Province gather at the Taiping Bridge for the Spring Sacrificial Rites festival to pray for good luck
Tradition: Around 200,000 people showed up to throw clothing and coins over the bridge in a bid for health and happiness for them and their families
As locals threw their clothing over the bridge to seek good fortune, the shallow river became filled with litter
Re-opened: After three years of renovation following China's earthquake, the bridge opened for people to pray during the Bridge-Treading
Fun for all: Locals took their young children and babies out for the traditional day too
But after three years of renovation, the bridge re-opened for people to pray during the 'Bridge-Treading'.
Some dressed in traditional Chinese costumes for the parade and others decorated the bridge and neighbouring trees with colourful streamers.
But as they threw their clothing over the bridge to seek health and happiness, the shallow river became filled with litter.
Elephant Circus Battered, kicked and stabbed
Anne's agony: Battered, kicked and stabbed, the desperate plight of Britain's last circus elephant
With each repeated blow, the pitchfork makes a sickening thwack as it slams into Anne the elephant's hide.
She flinches, at one point even appearing to lose her footing under the weight of a particularly savage strike.
The disturbing images come from a secretly shot video which campaigners say lays bare the cruel reality of her life as Britain's last circus elephant.
Merciless: In secretly shot video, a worker swings a vicious kick into the belly of 58-year-old Anne the elephant. Animal Defenders International planted the device because of concerns about how Anne was being treated at Bobby Roberts's Super Circus
It shows Anne enduring the abuse at the hands of her so-called carers while shackled in a dingy barn during the circus's winter break.
As well as being repeatedly hit with the pitchfork by one worker employed to feed and look after her, the 58-year-old elephant also appears to be stabbed in the face with the tool's metal prongs during one attack.
A total of 48 strikes, including kicks to her body and head, were recorded as she was left chained to the spot by her legs.
Campaigners claimed shackling Anne with leg irons is particularly cruel because she suffers arthritis and her movements are already badly hampered.
The graphic attacks were recorded over three-and-a-half weeks by a surveillance camera concealed on a farm in Polebrook, Northamptonshire.
Experts working for the pressure group Animal Defenders International (ADI) planted the device because of concerns about Anne's welfare.
In goes the pitchfork: The weapon is used to beat the animal and even to stab her in the head. The graphic attacks were recorded over three-and-a-half weeks by a surveillance camera concealed on a farm in Polebrook, Northamptonshire during the circus's winter break
They have repeatedly called for circus owner Bobby Roberts to hand over Anne so she can live out her days in a wildlife sanctuary.
But Mr Roberts, whose Super Circus began its latest tour on Thursday, insists the elephant is 'part of the family' and to separate her from the circus would cause her to 'pine away and die'.
The hidden camera also caught the abuse of other animals in the barn, including a camel, miniature ponies and horses held in stables.
Ponies and horses can be seen jumping backwards as they are kicked and slapped by a worker.
On one occasion a man spits in the face of the camel as he pushes a wheelbarrow of straw in front of it.
Anne is the oldest surviving elephant in Europe and is wheeled out in a headdress to pose for photographs with audience members up to twice a day.
And still the torture goes on: Anne, who is shackled despite having arthritis, is battered with a stave in the farm building
Elephants' life expectancy is around 70 years but the arthritis has taken its toll on her ageing body.
Campaigners have claimed her back right leg locks and weight gain has put even more strain on her frame.
The Asian elephant has been travelling with the Bobby Roberts Super Circus since the 1950s when she was bought by Mr Roberts's parents for around £3,000.
At the time she was one of many performing elephants but since then most circuses have stopped using animals.
In 2005, the RSPCA and the Government refused to intervene in her case after claims that she was being kept in appalling conditions.
Her plight then was revealed by our sister paper the Mail on Sunday and angry readers sent more than 1,500 letters to Ben Bradshaw, then Labour's Animal Health and Welfare Minister.
On show: Anne with owner Bobby Roberts, who runs the Super Circus. Anne has been with the circus since she was a baby
However ministry vets reported that Anne was in good health and kept clean and the RSPCA said there was no proof that she was a victim of 'unnecessary suffering'.
The distressing footage from ADI suggests a different story.
It was released as ministers prepare to announce new policies on the treatment of wild animals in circuses.
A consultation found 95 per cent of people said it was unacceptable to use any species of wild animal in a travelling circus.
The Government has since come under pressure to ban the practice but some expect it will unveil a framework for self-regulation instead.
Jan Creamer, who leads ADI, said her organisation has been concerned for Anne's welfare for 'many years'.
She called on police to examine the material with a view to investigating the circus for offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
Ms Creamer said: 'ADI is discussing the potential for legal action with its lawyers and will be in touch with the police.
'Poor Anne has been with the circus for over 50 years since she was a baby, having been caught in the wild and torn from her family.
'Elephants are social and extremely intelligent so this has been a living hell for her. At last we have managed to expose this circus operation for the cruel farce that it is.
'Anne's tragic story symbolises the plight of circus animals and is a shocking indictment of the circus industry at a key time as the Government considers a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.'
Last night, confronted with the evidence, Bobby Roberts said he would fire the Romanian groom paid £8,000 a year to care for Anne.
'I'm so disgusted and I can't believe this has happened under my nose,' he said.
'We trusted him and we'd check on her every hour or so, but I can't be there 24 hours a day.'
Asked whether he would consider handing over Anne, he said: 'We have talked about sending her to a sanctuary, but the only ones are in America and the journey would kill her.
'If the circumstances were right, I would part from her. But she'd pine, like I would.'
Mr Roberts's wife Moira said: 'It would break his heart to be parted from her.'

KENYATAAN AKHBAR

Transformer Guy
He's wheely something: Inventor who can Transform himself into the famous toy car

This is the man who has turned himself into a real life Transformer - by creating a fully functional Autobot costume out of a children's toy.
The must-have gadget for any die-hard Transformer fan was the brainchild of Californian Drew Beaumier.
He's already wowed the judges on American Idol and now he's created the crazy costume in his garage armed with just a beginner's tool box.
Revved up: Drew Beaumier created his real-life Transformer outfit in his garage at home in Fountain Valley, California, armed with a tool box, a Power Wheels car and spare parts from Walmart
It took eight weeks of constant trial and error to piece it together using a second-hand Power Wheels car to form the body and spare parts as well as glue bought at WalMart.
Transformer fanatic Drew then ripped the children's car apart leaving him with each separate section.
He then meticulously pieced the parts back together with hinges and glued it to a sports undergarment so he could wear it like a suit.
The robot costume comes complete with wheels attached to his arms and legs so he can fold down into a car and roll along.
Animated fun: The part-time bar tender has taken to re-enacting famous scenes from the Transformer series for tourists on Hollywood Boulevard
But when he stands up, the costume springs back out into the superhero pose famed by Optimus Prime and Co.
The part-time bar tender has now taken to re-enacting famous scenes from the Transformer series along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard.
And his street performances have already paid off the $300 he spent making his crazy creation after eager tourists began tipping him to have photos taken next to the real-life action hero.
Drew, 25, said: 'I've always been a big Transformers fan ever since I was a tiny kid. I remember I was struggling for money, working a few rubbish bar jobs and then it hit me - make a Transformer costume and go and entertain all the tourists.
Coming soon: Drew hopes to roll out his costume on mail order by 2012

'But the idea never really got off the ground until a few years after the idea first came to me.
'It was only when a good condition Power Wheels car was advertised for sale that I snapped it up and began making it.
'Within two months I had a prototype built and fully working.
'I've since won a big cash prize contest every Hallowe'en for three years now which has helped pay it off and after I started entertaining the crowds in Hollywood I earned enough to buy more Power Wheels cars and make new ones.'
So far the Transformer nut has made a Ford Mustang, Red Harley Davidson, Police Motorbike, Yellow Volkswagen Beetle and a pink Escalade, with an Iron Man replica in the pipeline.
And after being inundated with Facebook messages from adoring female fans, Drew revealed that his new 'wheels' have become a babe magnet.
He said: 'I've been contacted by quite a few women on Facebook since I wore the costume on American Idol.
'None have gone as far as propose to me yet, but I can confirm that the chicks definitely find Transformers sexy.'
British fans of the legendary series shouldn't have to wait too long to get their hands on one, with Drew planning to roll out the costumes to mail order buyers by Christmas 2012.
Drew, from Fountain Valley, USA, added: 'I've been getting emails and messages on Facebook from people all over the world wanting to buy one off me.
'Lots of them have been from the UK, but my business agent is currently crunching the numbers, so I'm hoping to start mass producing them at an affordable price soon.'

Nuclear plant blast
Race to avert a meltdown: Second blast rocks nuclear plant and hundreds contaminated as 180,000 flee
- Third explosion last night raises fears of nuclear meltdown
- Latest blast in number two reactor - previous blasts in reactors one and three
A desperate race against time to avert a nuclear meltdown was under way in Japan last night.
The country appealed to the U.S. for help to control three overheating reactors crippled by Friday’s devastating earthquake.
The plea came as a second and third explosion rocked the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, damaging two reactors.

Disaster: A satellite picture shows the remains of four reactors - by last night three of them had been hit by explosions. Nuclear experts were battling to bring the situation at the Fukushima plant under control
A senior Japanese politician said there were signs that fuel rods were melting in all three reactors. ‘Although we cannot directly check it, it’s highly likely to be happening,’ said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano.
Experts said the nightmare scenario was of a meltdown which triggers a massive build-up of pressure inside the containment unit. If the unit cracks, a plume of radioactive dust and gas would spill hundreds of miles into the air.
Fears of that meltdown at a Japanese power plant rose sharply last night after a new explosion was reported in the complex.
It is understood the blast was in the Number 2 reactor, where fuel rods had been in danger of overheating. Explosions have already occurred in the Number 1 and Number 3 reactors.

The new drama occurred because the explosion in the Number 3 reactor had damaged the cooling system in the adjoining reactor, resulting in last night's third blast.
Officials have been struggling to pacify the public's concerns about radioactive material escaping into the atmosphere.
With serious questions now surrounding the safety of the three crippled reactors, many people believe the chances of the material escaping have increased dramatically.

Workers at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant fled last night after a third explosion raised serious concerns about a meltdown.
Embarrassed officials of the Tokyo Electric Power company called a hurried news conference in Tokyo to apologise to the public for 'the inconvenience'.
But they were hesitant in disclosing details about the full extent of the danger to the public.
But they were hesitant in disclosing details about the full extent of the danger to the public.
In the House of Commons, David Cameron said he had ‘severe concerns’ for Britons who were in Japan at the time of the earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of them are still unaccounted for.
In a day of worrying developments:
- The official death toll rose to 2,800 but is expected eventually to exceed 10,000.
- Two thousand bodies were washed up in two towns in the worst affected area in north-east Japan.
- Strong aftershocks persisted in the stricken area, and a 4.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Tokyo at about 8pm British time yesterday.
- About 450,000 people have been evacuated nationwide – plus 180,000 from around the nuclear plant, where 190 have been exposed to some form of radiation.
- Almost 2million households are without power in the freezing north and about1.4million households have been left without running water.
Two other nuclear plants are also thought to be under threat. At Tokai there were also fears of overheating reactors as cooling pumps failed, while high levels of radiation were detected at the nuclear plant at Onagawa.
But the main concern remained the Fukushima plant on the north-east coast, where weary engineers were working around the clock for the fourth day.
Before last night’s third explosion they had been engaged in a last-ditch move to use seawater to cool the overheating core in reactor number two after fuel rods inside it were exposed.
Experts said it was probably the first time in the nuclear industry’s 57-year history that seawater, which is corrosive, has been used to cool fuel rods, a sign of how close Japan may be to a major accident.
Although the plant’s three working reactors shut down automatically when the magnitude nine earthquake struck, the cooling systems which keep the radioactive uranium and plutonium fuel rods cool have been hit by a series of failures.
Earlier yesterday a vast cloud of black smoke erupted from the plant after an explosion – the second in two days – demolished the building housing reactor three.
The explosion was triggered when engineers released steam to prevent a dangerous build-up of pressure inside the sealed reactor. At superheated temperatures inside the core the water vapour had split into hydrogen and oxygen which ignited, destroying the outer building and injuring 11 people, one seriously.
A similar explosion rocked the plant on Saturday when steam was released from another reactor.
Yesterday’s blast left the 80-inch concrete and steel walls which protect the nuclear reactor intact.
Evacuation: Residents shelter in Sendai city in Miyagi after being evacuated from their homes following the blasts at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Hundreds of thousands have been evacuated amid growing fears that the plant could go into meltdown
Devastation: Earthquake followed by tsunami has caused chaos in Japan and there are fears of a radiation leak from the Fukushima nuclear power plant
However, shortly after the explosion, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said it had lost the ability to cool the neighbouring reactor two – the third reactor to suffer cooling problems.
As the engineers tried to inject seawater using fire pumps the water levels dropped twice unexpectedly, leaving the fuel rods uncovered by cooling water. At one point they were exposed for two and a half hours.
Without coolant, fuel rods can overheat and melt. In a serious meltdown, radioactive molten material falls through the floor of the containment vessel into the ground underneath.
The drama at Fukushima has added to the anxiety for locals shellshocked by the quake and tsunami. Many Japanese are sceptical of assurances given by government officials about nuclear leaks, following at least two cover-ups in the wake of dramas in other plants in recent years.
Men in protective suits continued to sweep Geiger counters over terrified survivors, looking for evidence of radiation exposure.
After Japan’s request to the United States for help cooling the reactors, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it was considering providing technical advice.
President Barack Obama offered any help the U.S. could provide to help recover from its ‘multiple disasters’.
The U.S. Navy moved ships away from the devastated north-east Japanese coast after 17 helicopter crews helping in the rescue efforts were contaminated with radiation. The crews were treated on an aircraft carrier.
Scientists say there are serious dangers but little risk of a catastrophe similar to the 1986 blast in Chernobyl, where the reactor did not have a containment shell. Some said the length of time since the crisis began showed the chemical reactions inside the reactor were not moving quickly toward a complete meltdown.
Even so, the nuclear danger has prompted several countries to warn against travelling to and staying in Japan. In Britain, the Foreign Office advised against all non-essential travel to Tokyo and the north-east of Japan.
Disaster shows nuclear should be scrapped, say green groups
Green campaigners wasted no time in exploiting the disaster, claiming it proved nuclear power could never be safe.
Greenpeace warned that Japan faced a nuclear meltdown, while the Green Party called on the Coalition to scrap its nuclear programme.
Green Party leader and MP Caroline Lucas also called for an EU level inquiry into the wider implications of the nuclear accident.
Steve Campbell, of Greenpeace, said: ‘This proves once and for all that nuclear power cannot ever be safe. Japan’s nuclear plants were built with the latest technology, specifically to withstand natural disasters, yet we still face potential meltdown.’
Greenpeace was also concerned about the lack of data on the total amount of radiation already released, and whether the areas where spent radioactive fuel is dumped – outside the containment area of the reactor – were secure.
But nuclear scientists said the earthquake had highlighted how Japan’s power stations were robust.
Professor Paddy Regan, a nuclear physicist at Surrey University, said: ‘We had a doomsday earthquake in a country with 55 nuclear power stations and they all shut down perfectly, although three have had problems since.
‘This was a huge earthquake, and as a test of the resilience and robustness of nuclear plants it seems they have withstood the effects very well.’
Chris Huhne, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, has ordered a review of the safety of the country’s nuclear reactors. The UK is poised to build a new generation of nuclear power stations over the next decade.

Japan Hell on Earth
Hell on Earth: I've seen 20 wars. But nothing prepared me for this
By Alex Thomson

The first thing you notice is the silence which seems to hang over the place. There is no sound as we approach this once-thriving coastal town.
Driving round the final bend in the mountain road before making the descent into Minami Sanriku, nothing can quite prepare you for the sight of such destruction.
In my 30 years as a war correspondent I have covered more than 20 conflicts and several major earthquakes, but I have never seen anything on this scale.
There is nothing left: A woman surveys the ravaged town of Minami Sanriku
One minute you are passing through towns and villages completely untouched by natural disaster – not even a pane missing from the windows – and then as you turn the corner it hits you.
The wasteland: A few shattered buildings that survived the might of the tsunami stand sentinel over Miami Sanriku, where the devastation stretches as far as the eye can see
The most astonishing view stretches out below towards the sea for at least four miles. An entire town of around 17,000 people has simply ceased to exist here.
At least 95 per cent of the buildings are not merely ruined; they have been reduced to a morass of splintered wood, jagged concrete and twisted metal. All of this is hideously decorated with the details of destroyed family lives: a woman smiles up from her wedding photographs, a smashed guitar lies in the debris. I see a broken doll, and pages from a child’s school exercise book.
The police try to prevent us going any further, but we get out of our vehicle and walk on. All I can see is mile upon winding mile of a town totally pulverised.

An articulated lorry has been concertinaed by the force of the water, the cab ripped off. Four cars have smashed into it and the roof of a house sits on top. Homes have been reduced to matchsticks and driftwood. On the road that leads up to the school, I see another four or five cars hanging perilously over the edge of the hill.
The scene is reminiscent of the photographs of Nagasaki or Hiroshima after the A bombs were dropped during the Second World War. The occasional concrete structure has survived, but nothing else.
This should have been a busy Sunday lunchtime with day trippers and local people enjoying this prosperous, beautiful area with its stunning beaches and wooded areas.
Instead there are small knots of people all across the flattened area, quietly searching for victims or returning to what remains of their homes, searching for possessions they had no time to save.
There is no crying, no hysteria, no anger. It is in the psyche of the Japanese people to do what they have to do in silence and with dignity.
The tidal wave water has receded, but the town’s river is spilling all over the place because the force of the tsunami realigned its banks. There are large stagnant pools of seawater, and mud everywhere.
As we look on, rescuers gently retrieve another body, cradled in a filthy blanket – all they had to hand. The love, respect and ceremony with which these people wrap their dead – people they knew – is perhaps more touching than any tears.
The body will be taken up the hill to the town’s secondary school and join the others in the college gymnasium, now a mortuary.
Ten thousand people are believed to be missing, but as yet there is no way of knowing if they are dead or by some miracle managed to escape before the tsunami struck.
At the school I meet one of the town’s restaurant owners, Yuchida Takuma. He is helping in the mortuary, delicately tying the bright blue polythene body bags which lie in rows.

‘I am lucky to be alive,’ he tells me. ‘We heard the sirens – the tsunami warning – and drove up the hill to the school, to high ground. The sirens saved my life.’
I ask him what is left of his restaurant down in the town. ‘Oh,’ he says, bravely managing a smile. ‘There is nothing left at all. It is finished, washed away like everything else.’
Outside on the college baseball ground, a Japanese Army Chinook lands to unload supplies of food and desperately-needed blankets – the nights here are sub-zero. On the roof of the high school building the letters SOS are written bold, for the chopper to land.
Across the way in the college reception, we meet English teacher Shinji Saki. ‘I saw it all,’ he says. ‘The whole thing. First there was the quake, the shaking. Then, the sirens warning there would be a tsunami.
‘I was already here, teaching, up on the hill. But in a few minutes you heard this huge roar and then it all began. We watched as our entire town was simply swept away. It no longer exists.’
I look at him, wondering how it must have felt for those gathered on the hill on Friday watching their friends, family, businesses, being washed away before their eyes.
‘There were around 7,000 of us on the hill that day,’ Shinji says. ‘Perhaps a few thousand at the school on the hill opposite. But there are 17,000 in the town. All the others have gone.’ He shrugs: ‘Who knows if there are eight or ten thousand people still missing here. I just can’t comprehend it.’
We are about to walk away when he opens up about the horrors he has just witnessed. ‘You see, there was this man. I saw him going past on the water, sitting on the roof of his house as it floated by. I saw him. I looked at him and there was nothing at all I could do.’
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide: A mighty wave of foaming black waterbursts through an embankment in Miyako, crushing cars parked in the street and obliterating everything in its path
Broken home People walk through the debris of what was once a suburb of Minamisanriku in Miyagi Prefecture which was hardest hit by Friday's earthquake and tsunami
All the schools were full the Friday afternoon the tsunami struck. The buildings are all on high ground, so there are many children who have lost their parents.
Everybody here, absolutely everybody, has lost relatives. People are living in the school now, sitting quietly in rows in the classrooms and gymnasiums, with their blankets. Anyone who needs medical treatment has been flown out by helicopter as there is no hospital left in the town.
We leave at dusk, trudging back through mile after mile of utter destruction.
Overhead, the buzzards circle, for there is carrion to be had here. Countless bodies have yet to be retrieved from what remains of this town, wiped from the map in a few moments of thunderous horror.

Most people who find a spider in their bedroom quickly try to get rid of it.
But new research shows that one arachnid might actually be best kept by your bedside.
A single bite from the Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to have side-effects including four-hour long erections.
Unusual side-effects: A single bite from the Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to cause four-hour long erections
The eight-legged creature - also known as the armed spider, banana spider or Phoneutria nigriventer - is native to South and Central America.
Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia believe the species contains a possible breakthrough for erectile dysfunction.
Dr Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, said: ‘The venom of the Phoneutria nigriventer spider is a very rich mixture of several molecules.
‘These molecules are called toxins, and then we have various toxins in this venom with different activity.
‘Because of this, when a human is bitten by this spider, we can observe many different symptoms including priapism, a condition in which the penis is continually erect.'
Other side-effects on top of the long-painful erections include loss of muscle control, severe pain, difficulty breathing and if its victim is not treated with anti-venom, could lead to death due to oxygen deprivation.
But its unusual effects could be used to treat sexual dysfunction in both men and women, according to Dr. Nunes.
The new Viagra? The Brazilian wandering spider's venom might lead to a breakthrough new treatment for erectile dysfunction
In her study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Dr. Nunes’ experiment managed to give erection-challenged rats with high blood pressure a bit of a boost.
A peptide called PnTx2-6 was given to the flaccid rats, who achieved side-effect free erections.
Dr. Nunes said: ‘We found the toxin responsible [for the erections] and performed experiments using hypertensive rats which have severe erectile dysfunction. The toxin was able to normalise the erectile dysfunction in these animals.’
The spider’s toxin worked in a different way to drugs such as Viagra though and Nunes told MSNBC: ‘This is good because we know that some patients don’t respond to the conventional therapy.
‘This could be an optional treatment for them.’
She is also hopeful that the toxin could help female sexual dysfunction, but has not yet studied this.
The Brazilian wandering spider, which has a leg span of over four inches, has already been found in some American and Canadian supermarkets but is normally found in tropical banana plantations.
According to the curator of arachnids at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum, Rod Crawford, only 10 humans out of 7,000 have died from its bite.

State-of-the-art technology costing £500,000 is helping parachute troops leap into the virtual world.
The Ministry of Defence today unveiled its latest piece of equipment, which is designed to bridge the gap between dry training and live jumps.
The 'pivotal piece of equipment' will help members of the Armed Forces master the art of parachute jumping by showing them exactly what it is like lining up in the back of the plane, jumping out and landing safely.

The trainer also runs a number of emergency situations so the parachutist can practise drills realistically in the safety of the simulation.
The parachute training school at RAF Brize Norton, near Oxford, had the £500,000 virtual reality parachute trainer signed off in January and the first official course is due to take place in March.
Parachute students are suspended by a harness and wear virtual reality goggles to practise jumps in a range of realistic environments.

Instructors said that while they can never replicate a live descent, the idea is to hone trainees' skills ready for the real thing
It will be used to train any member of the armed forces who is required to use a parachute.
The training school runs eight to 10 square courses a year - where the students are trained to use square parachutes - with around 32 people on each course.
The instructor can view what each trainee can see through their goggles on high-resolution screens as well as an overall picture of the individual or group descent, with up to eight students.

Squadron Leader Jez Whitten-Brown, airborne forces equipment requirements manager, said: 'This pivotal piece of equipment bridges the gap between what we're doing in the hanger and a live jump.
'It's as close to doing it for real, you won't get anything better.'
Flight Lieutenant Rich Pike, an instructor at the school, said: 'The new parachute trainer gives us the ability to put paratroopers through highly realistic simulated parachute descents.

'Trainees can be familiarised with, and tested on, the correct drills to a level previously only achieved by jumping from an aircraft.
'The most important feature is the ability to hone emergency procedures which will better prepare trainees to deal with a range of situations.'
