At least 65 are dead and scores missing under rubble after an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Christchurch suburb of Lyttelton at 12.51pm, New Zealand time.
Buildings, including the famous cathedral, were destroyed and rescuers were frantically trying to reach those trapped inside. Mayor Bob Parker described it as 'black day for this shaken city'.
