In an offering to local gods, a man holds aloft a firework housed in a bamboo tube reinforced with hemp at the Matsudaira Toshogu Shinto Shrine near Toyota in Japan. Participants suffer varying degrees of burns in what is also a test of bravery. The ceremony was part of a spring purification rite at the shrine of the Matsudaira clan, one of the most notable families in Japanese history.
