A volunteer firefighter who was severely burned when a burning roof collapsed on him in a rescue search in 2001 received the most extensive and complex face transplant ever performed. According to the NYU Langone Medical Center, the transplant covered most of the skull and neck. The surgery was performed in August, and the patient, Patrick Hardison, is still undergoing physical therapy at the hospital.
The surgery was a total success, and the fireman from Missisippi is recovering exceptionally well. The doctor Eduardo Rodriguez, who led the surgical team that made transplant, said the surgery was the most extensive one ever undertaken successfully in terms of the amount of material transferred.
