BAPA PERUBAHAN MALAYSIA

Dr Asri: Abdullah 'Bapa Perubahan Malaysia'

Patient dies after woman blocked ambulance with her car

Patient dies after woman blocked ambulance with her car in dispute over shared driveway
By Rebecca Camber

Gillian Birdsall, 50, is accused of deliberately blocking in an ambulance

A man died after a neighbour blocked in an ambulance taking him to hospital, a court has been told.

Malcolm Burdett, 62, was being wheeled out of his house when Gillian Birdsall parked her car on their shared driveway.

A court heard that when paramedics asked her to move it, she replied: 'Why, are they dead?'

The 50-year-old finally agreed to shift her Citroen but her actions were said to have caused a ten-minute delay in Mr Burdett getting medication.

The piano teacher and father-of-two, who had severe chest pains, died in hospital little more than an hour later.

Birdsall appeared in court on Tuesday charged with obstructing an emergency vehicle.

Magistrates heard that she told police she had been in a hurry to take her dogs for a walk and was frustrated at motorists parking on her patch of driveway.

Anna Marie Mills told the court that she confronted Birdsall while her paramedic colleague carried out an electrocardiogram test in the back of the ambulance.

'I asked her how long she was going to be parked there as being an emergency vehicle we would need to leave shortly,' she said.

'She just responded saying it was a shared driveway. We discussed that the patient obviously needed to be in hospital urgently.'

Miss Mills said that had they not been delayed 'I would have been able to get the medication quicker and we would have left quicker'.

Dispute: Gillian Birdsall's house on the left. The ambulance was parked in the drive to the Burdett's house on the right when she blocked it in

Charlie Butterworth, prosecuting, said: 'It was deliberate, obstructive and calculated to be difficult.

'Her actions both caused an obstruction and hindered them in their work. The defendant was comprehensively informed that it was an emergency vehicle, she had every opportunity to see the vehicle and move hers out of the way. She had no excuse.

'The ambulance crew were obstructed in carrying out their duty in an emergency.'

She added: 'There was no suggestion the defendant's actions were in any way a contributory factor in Mr Burdett's death.'

Linda Newton, a neighbour, told Bournemouth magistrates of her shock at the incident outside her home in the Dorset resort on October 31 last year.

'She [Birdsall] looked very agitated and said what a waste of ambulance people's time,' she said. 'I couldn't believe it.

'I came back out again and I heard Mrs Birdsall shouting at the ambulance lady, saying "Has anybody died?" really sarcastically.

'And she repeated it again, "Has anybody died?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.'

Birdsall, who has two part-time jobs, later told police she did not realise it was an emergency vehicle.

She told officers: 'It feels that whenever I am in the drive I'm in the wrong. I thought it was one of those ambulances they use to pick people up but did not think it was a real ambulance.

'I wouldn't intentionally block an emergency vehicle. I am ashamed of the fact I did say "Is anybody dead?". But at that time I was angry.'

The married mother-of-two denies obstruction. The case continues.

Raped by "friend of the Dalai Lama"

How I was raped by the bogus guru of suburbia, by dancer
By Colin Fernandez
Michael Lyons, 51, styled himself as spiritualist Mohan Singh

Michael Lyons, 51, styled himself as spiritualist Mohan Singh

A 'spiritual guru' raped his female followers telling them it would enlighten them and 'fix their bodies inside and out', a court heard.

Michael Lyons, 51, who went under the name of Mohan Singh, masqueraded as a healer and convinced his victims he was a friend of the Dalai Lama, it was alleged.

But he was in fact a sexual predator who assaulted disciples at his suburban home, a jury was told.

Philip Katz, QC, prosecuting, said: 'We say he has been systematically raping and sexually assaulting new recruits into his group whom he found attractive.'

Lyons is accused of attacking seven young women between 1998 and 2008.

Yesterday one of them told the jury at Wood Green Crown Court, North London, that a friend introduced her to 'Mohan Singh' in January 2005.

The 23-year-old dancer from New Zealand said she had been feeling homesick and her friend said Mohan 'had healthy methods, osteopathic treatments, that will help you feel better. He's helped a lot of girls feel better by changing their energy and things like that'.

Mohan 'gave her a lot of attention' and asked her many personal questions, the court heard. She was then taken to the home of several of Mohan's female followers, which had a 'shrine' in the living room.

Mohan went round 'giving back rubs' to the women as they sat in a circle, the court heard. He then told all the girls to get up and dance to music by Michael Jackson. After an hour or two, Mohan took one of his female disciples downstairs, it was alleged.

The witness said: 'When they both came back, I remember everyone commenting on the woman, saying how much energy she gained from being downstairs and getting some sort of treatment.

'I didn't think so. I thought she looked quite flushed.'

When the witness said she wanted a shower, Mohan suggested she could do it at his house in Belsize Park, North London. She told the court that Mohan ran the shower and promised to bring her some special soap.

'He came in at one stage and turned the shower up, and it got really quite hot,' she said. 'He gave me the soap, it gave me a numbing tingling feeling.

'The next thing I can remember he jumped in the shower as well, to use the soap on me, to give me a back rub. He was touching me. At first it didn't feel sexual, he rubbed my arms, and my back, then my shoulders.

'He said there was something wrong with my kidneys, and I could fix this sort of thing with his treatment. He was turning me around at certain points. I remember thinking it was quite strange.'

The woman said she had to get out of the shower as she was tired. But as there were no couches in his house, Mohan told her she would have to lie on his bed, the court heard.

On the bed, she said: 'He was rubbing me and rubbing my breasts. He said he could make my breasts better with the right sort of treatment and massage. He said he could heal my body inside and out.'

Mohan then climbed on top of her and had sex with her, the court heard.

'He was still talking about fixing my body and enlightening me, helping me with positive energy,' she said.

'I remember him saying things like, he was enlightening me, and I'd never had an organic p***s and he was giving me his organic p***s.'

'Throughout the whole time he would get up and run around the room, saying we could have many babies together, and how he had a great organic p***s.'

The woman said she was terrified and started crying. Eventually Mohan stopped. As she left the room, some of Mohan's followers said she 'looked amazing and that I had been enlightened. I remember feeling horrible.'

The next day the witness accompanied Mohan and some of his female followers to Paris by Eurostar, leaving at 6am.

During the trip, during which they walked past some 'peep shows', Mohan told her 'they should have sex together in public and do a show'.

They returned to England and were taken to see someone described as 'a Lama' - but not the Dalai Lama - give a talk to 80 people at a hotel. She was later taken back to the house with the shrine, but made a break for freedom after receiving a text from her boyfriend telling her to escape.

The court has heard from two earlier alleged victims. An American woman said Lyons raped her in July 1998 after showing her a religious film. Another alleged rape victim wept as she told the jury how she had been attacked at Lyons's flat in June 2002 after he burned herbs under her nose.

Surrounded by female followers, he performed acupuncture on her, then raped her in his bedroom. Lyons denies five counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

The trial continues.

The whole body airport scanner that reveals your underwear
By Daily Mail Reporter
scan

A composite of four separate scans, a female in the left two and a male in the right two. The scanner penetrates clothing

Travellers in America are being asked to pass through whole body scanners at airport security checkpoints, which penetrates their clothing.

The new technology, developed by New York based L3 Communications, has raised concerns after it was revealed that underwear is visible in the scans.

It has drawn comparisons with scanners on the 1990 science fiction film Total Recall, which revealed the bodies of Mars-bound passengers beneath their clothing.

Passengers remove metal items, jackets and shoes and step into a small glass chamber.

Whole body scanner

Passengers lift their arms over their heads before the scan

Lifting their arms about their heads the sensors scan the body for about three seconds.

The sensors can detect part of the electromagnetic spectrum that emits energy from the body at wavelengths of one millimetre.

Because the energy from a human body is radiated at a higher rate than plastic, metal and ceramic, the unit can then reveal those objects.

The scan blurs out the face of the passenger, and the image is not stored.

However, the American Civil Liberties Union said the body scanning technology could be too intrusive as it could project images of mastectomies and catheter tubes.

The Transportation and Security Administration has placed the scanners in airports in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Miami, San Fransisco, Tulsa, Okla and Albuquerque, in a pilot program.

It is currently a voluntary system.

There are no plans to bring the scanners to the UK at this time.

A spokesman for the TSA said the new scanners were better for travellers with hip or knee replacements, as they are currently patted down if their prosthetic sets off a security alarm.

Mother-in-law 'kept her sons' three wives locked up like slaves or dogs for 13 years'
By Jaya Narain
Naseebah Bibi

'Totally dominating': Naseebah Bibi, pictured outside Preston Crown Court, is accused of keeping her sons' wives as prisoners in her Blackburn home

A mother locked up her three daughters-in-law and treated them as slaves for more than a decade, a court heard yesterday.

Naseebah Bibi, 62, is said to have ruled the women by fear - beating and slapping them if they disobeyed her, threatening to break their legs and denying them food.

Their ordeal only came to light when one wife managed to break free and ran into the street to alert a neighbour.

The court was told that Tazeem Akhtar, Nagina Akhtar and Nisbah Akhtar had arrived in Britain over several years after arranged marriages to Bibi's sons Nahim, Fahim and Nadeem in Pakistan.

Instead of living with their husbands and raising families, the women were put to work by their mother-in-law cooking and cleaning and using an industrial sewing machine.

Bibi, a mother of six, denies three charges of false imprisonment of the three women between 1993 and 2006.

Her son Nadeem, 31, denies falsely imprisoning his wife Nisbah between 2005 and 2007 and one count of actual bodily harm.

Philip Boyd, prosecuting, said: 'Mrs Bibi was clearly exploiting each of these women. They were treated like children, slaves or dogs by a regime of threats of force or actual force.

'These young women had been rejected by their husbands of their arranged marriages, they couldn't speak English, they couldn't go back to Pakistan, they were in limbo and so they were exploited by the defendant for her own purposes.'

Preston Crown Court heard that the first wife was Nagina Akhtar who had married her husband, Fahim in 1993.

The couple had three children, but she spent her days cleaning and making clothing on a sewing machine.

Mr Boyd said: 'As soon as she came to this country, she was ordered by Mrs Bibi to spend the day sewing on an industrial sewing machine.

'She sewed all day, every day. She sewed for money, but she didn't see any of the money.'

When she once left the small terraced house in Blackburn, Bibi warned her: 'How dare you leave the house. If you do it again I will break your legs.'

Mr Boyd told the court that Nagina was forced to live under these conditions for more than 13 years.

The houses in Blackburn where the women were held

The houses in Blackburn where the women were held

Her nightmare ended in October 2006, when her son Umar, three, told nursery staff that he had seen his grandmother beating his mother. Nagina was taken to a refuge by domestic violence workers and her children were taken into care.

The second wife was Tazeem Akhtar, who married Nahim in Pakistan and came to Britain after her visa was processed in 2001.

Mr Boyd said: 'She came expecting to live and have children with her husband, something she had dreamed of for some years. Her dream was doomed.

'She did not know that Nahim already had a partner, a white lady, and had two children. He had effectively no intention of living as her husband. He effectively had his own life and she only discovered that on the first day she arrived.'

She was also put to work by her mother-in-law in a 'gruelling' dawn to midnight routine that left her shattered.

Mr Boyd said: 'She was simply treated like a slave. She would get up 6am and was ordered to do all the house work, to clean the floors and windows and she even had to do the washing in cold water by hand, even though there was an electric washing machine.

'She did try to use the washing once but she was beaten by Mrs Bibi. She would be beaten by being slapped in the face, hit with a slipper on the arms and legs and had her hair pulled.'

She was allowed to eat only when she was given permission.

Her ordeal ended after 18 months in 2003 when Bibi flew her back to Pakistan and abandoned her there. Giving evidence via a videolink in Islamabad, Tazeem said: 'In England my life was not happy. I was very sad. I face a lot of grief and it was very distressing for me.'

Wiping away tears, she said that if she disobeyed Bibi would 'hit her with a brush across the head'.

She said: 'I was frightened and scared. She never let me out. I had to work, work, work.'

The third wife was Nisbah Akhtar - sister of Tazeem - who married Nadeem in Pakistan and arrived in England in December 2005.

'When she arrived she had the expectation of being husband and wife and she would have a rosy future,' said Mr Boyd. 'But on her arrival she was shunned by her husband and the same pattern of abuse began.

The court was told that on October 28, 2007, an argument broke out between Bibi and Nisbah which resulted in Nisbah's husband Nadeem punching her in the face and locking her in a bedroom.

She pretended she needed the toilet and then managed to escape, running out of the front door into the street. A neighbour alerted police, and Bibi and Nadeem were questioned.

The trial continues.
