Liverpool FC and Standard Chartered Bank announced today they had agreed a four year deal for the bank to become the club's main sponsor - the largest commercial agreement in Liverpool's history.

The agreement, which starts in July 2010 and runs through to the end of the 2013-14 season, will see the bank's name and logo appear on the Liverpool shirt.

Liverpool FC is the most successful club in English football, enjoying a global following most recently evidenced in its highly successful pre-season tour of Singapore and Thailand. As official club sponsors, Standard Chartered will enjoy a major rights package which will provide the platform to significantly step up the Bank's brand awareness across its core markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Standard Chartered PLC, listed on both London and Hong Kong stock exchanges, ranks among the top 25 companies in the FTSE-100 by market capitalisation. The Bank has more than doubled its revenue and profits over the last five years and has performed consistently well, delivering record results throughout the recent financial crisis.

(NST) SHAH ALAM: A witness yesterday raised doubts over claims by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission that suspects were never beaten. To the contrary, he gave a blow-by-blow account of how he was tortured.

T. Sivanesan, 22, was a suspect in a graft probe last year and was detained for five days where he was allegedly beaten and stripped and even had an ice pack put in his underwear.

Days after his release, Sivanesan lodged reports with the police and Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and also took his complaints to non-governmental organisation Suaram and Public Complaints Bureau chief Senator Datuk T. Murugiah.

In earlier proceedings, four MACC officers had denied that they had used force or threats when questioning witnesses or suspects.

But Sivanesan, an assistant manager with Puncak Rezeki Makmur, told the court yesterday how he was punched, kicked, blindfolded and forced to strip when he was called in for questioning for five days at the Selangor MACC office in Plaza Masalam in September last year.

The witness also named four officers who he said took part in torturing him when he refused to sign a confession. He named them as Khairul Nizam, Mohan, Raymond and Ashraf.

Sivanesan, who was called to testify by counsel Gobind Singh Deo, said three plainclothes officers came to his house on Sept 4 last year and asked him to follow them to MACC office to facilitate investigations into a graft case.

"I knew one of them as Zulkifli. Later, I learnt that the other two were called Ashraf and 'J'."

When he arrived at the office, he was taken to a room. Another officer, identified as Mohan, came into the room and threatened him in Tamil.

"He said if I did not tell the truth, this place would be hell.

"Later, three officers brought a letter and tried to force me to sign it, but I refused."

Sivanesan said he was handcuffed from behind and left in the room for about four hours. He said he was taken to his house where MACC officers conducted a search. He was then taken back to the MACC office.

"I was taken to a room where I saw a tall bespectacled man wrapping an iron rod in newspapers. He slapped my cheeks five to six times.

"He told me to sign a confession letter but I refused. He said I was stubborn and forced me to strip down to my underwear."

Sivanesan said 10 to 15 people then slapped, kicked and punched him.

"The man who earlier slapped me came back and began beating my buttocks with the iron rod. They attacked me all at once.

"Ashraf slapped me more than twice and shouted profanities at me.

"I tried to fight back but was overpowered. Ashraf cuffed my feet and when I was on the ground, he hit my private parts and the soles of my feet with a cane. I was also blindfolded with a white towel with the letters 'MACC' emblazoned on it."

He said during that time, he heard one of the officers, whom he identified as a "deputy director", instructing the other officers to continue what they were doing.

"There were about 15 people in the room. I know some of their names and I can identify the rest as I will never forget their faces."

Sivanesan said he passed out after that. When he regained consciousness, he was still in the room and there was an ice pack in his underwear.

He said the "torture session" resumed the following day when the bespectacled officer slapped, punched and kicked him for about 20 minutes.

He claimed there were three other officers who stood by and watched.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Kehadapan penduduk Seksyen 23 yang dihormati,

Semoga surat ini menemui tuan-tuan dalam keadaan sihat wal afiat serta keimanan yang teguh dan jitu berkat bulan Ramadhan ini.

Saya mengambil kesempatan ini untuk mengingatkan diri saya serta tuan-tuan akan Firman Allah, Surah Al Maaidah ayat 8 yang bermaksud;

“Bertindak adil! Ianya lebih rapat dengan keTaqwaan.”

Semoga dalam usaha kita membina keTaqwaan dalam bulan Ramadhan ini, kita mengingati hakikat bahawa ‘keTaqwaan’ yang diusahakan itu mempunyai hubungan rapat dengan keadilan. Keadilan ini pula perlu dilaksanakan terhadap semua, walaupun terhadap yang tidak disenangi. Ini ditegaskan di dalam ayat yang sama yang bermaksud,

“dan jangan oleh kerana kebencian kamu terhadap sesuatu kaum menyebabkan kamu tidak berlaku adil…”

Kalau terhadap kaum yang dibenci sekalipun dituntut keadilan, apatah lagi terhadap jiran sekampung dan warga sekota? Walaupun mereka tidak sebangsa dan seagama, hakikatnya mereka tidak memusuhi kita atau memusuhi Islam. Maka, mereka layak mendapat layanan yang adil. Adakah adil sekiranya kita menafikan mereka hak tempat beribadat yang berhampiran dan sebaliknya memaksa mereka ke seksyen 22, di tengah-tengah kawasan Industri berat, jauh dari kawasan kediaman? Tiada apa di sana kecuali kilang-kilang.

Saya hanyalah seorang wakil rakyat yang dipilih oleh tuan-tuan melalui pilihan raya yang diadakan pada masa-masa tertentu. Saya tidak berhak memaksa apa-apa pandangan atau keputusan ke atas tuan-tuan semua. Saya hanya mengharapkan keputusan yang tuan-tuan rumuskan sendiri berhubung cadangan pemindahan kuil ke Seksyen 23 mengambil kira persoalan keTaqwaan dan keAdilan seperti di atas.

Islam adalah agama yang adil. Keadilannya mampu menawan hati semua manusia. Yang paling saya takuti adalah tindakan yang memberikan gambaran bahawa Islam adalah sebaliknya. Allah murka terhadap mereka yang bertindak dengan cara yang merosakkan imej Islam sehingga menyebabkan manusia terhalang untuk mengenali keadilannya. Allah berfirman ayat 94 Surah An-Nahl yang bermaksud:-

“Dan kamu ditimpa kehinaan kerana menjadi penghalang kepada jalan Allah (disebabkan tindakan buruk kamu) dan untuk kamu azab yang amat dahsyat (pada hari akhirat kelak)”

Ada yang bertanya kepada saya, tidakkah saya khuatir saya kalah dalam Pilihan Raya yang bakal tiba oleh kerana isu ini. Bagi saya sekiranya itulah kehendak pengundi, apakan daya? Yang penting sejarah akan menjadi saksi bahawa ada Ahli Parlimen dari parti Islam yang memperjuangkan keadilan untuk semua walaupun orang Hindu. Seperti kisah seorang raja Islam di Mysore, Bangalore, India pada abad ke 18 yang bernama Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Tippu (Tippu Sultan). Rakyatnya terdiri daripada orang Islam, Hindu dan Sikh. Hingga ke hari ini rakyat India masih menceritakan mengenai pemerintahan beliau yang berasaskan Islam sebagai sebuah pemerintahan yang adil.

Semoga Allah memberkati kita semua dan memimpin kita ke jalan yang diRedhaiNya.

Drinking, promiscuity and a cycle of low aspiration mean Britain is becoming the 'bad parent' of the western world.

A vast study of youngsters' well-being in 30 industrialised nations ranked Britain among the worst for health, lifestyles and school standards relative to public spending levels.

Underage teenagers in Britain are more likely to get drunk than those in any other country, and the proportions of teenage mothers and single-parent families are among the highest in the survey.

In 'risky behaviour' - a combination of drinking, smoking and teenage pregnancy - Britain's performance is worse than all nations other than Turkey and Mexico.

Educational achievement is low given the billions poured in by Labour, with more than one in ten youngsters aged 15 to 19 not in school, training or work. This is the fourth highest rate in the 30 countries, ahead only of Italy, Turkey and Mexico.

Last night a youth charity warned: 'Unless we can start to improve this situation the UK risks becoming the bad parent of Europe.'

The report, published by the economic thinktank the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, compared data from 30 leading countries on children's welfare.

It found that public spending on children in Britain is well above average, at more than £90,000 from birth to the age of 18. Family incomes are relatively healthy, too, ranking eighth out of the 30 countries studied.

But education results remained low relative to spending levels, the report said, while concluding that social mobility was stalled, with children finding it hard to break out of their class structures and earn more than their parents.

'In the United Kingdom . . . each new generation is more likely to find themselves in the same position in the earnings distribution as their parents,' it said.

A third of children aged of 13 and 15 in Britain had been drunk at least twice, despite being too young to be served alcohol, compared with 12 per cent of American youngsters and 14 per cent of French.

Unlike in many other countries, drunkenness was more common among girls, with half of 15-year-olds having got drunk at least twice against 44 per cent of boys.

Teenage pregnancy is also far higher than average across the OECD. The UK has the fourth highest teenage pregnancy rate after Mexico, Turkey and the United States. In Britain, 23.4 teenage girls per 1,000 gave birth in 2005.

Britain ranked a poor 20th out of the 30 in terms of children's 'health and safety', with infant mortality rates higher than average and among the lowest numbers of toddlers being vaccinated against measles.

Only 70 per cent of under-16s in England live with both parents, a figure-which falls to 68 per cent in Scotland and 66 in Wales. This is well below the OECD average of 75 per cent.

However the OECD analysis insisted there was 'no unambiguous proof' that growing up in a single parent family had anything more than a 'small' impact on the outcomes for children.

On the plus side, the report said that children in the UK enjoy school much more than many of their international counterparts. Bullying is less frequent and teenage suicides are less common in the UK than in most other industrialised countries.

The report echoes research two years ago from Unicef that put British children bottom of the 21 most advanced countries.

That report cited family breakdown, drink, drugs, teenage sex and fear of violence as the issues confronting teenagers.

Last night Joyce Moseley, chief executive of youth charity Catch22, said: 'The UK has consistently scored poorly in OECD reports on the levels of young people not in work, education or training; teenage pregnancy and youth substance abuse.

'Unless we can start to improve this situation the UK risks becoming the bad parent of Europe.

'The OECD makes it clear that although the UK spends more than most on young people, the money is poorly targeted for older children.

'It is important that the good work done in the early years is backed up with consistency and targeted support for the most vulnerable young people.'

Tory schools spokesman Nick Gibb said: 'The low levels of social mobility and high levels of inequality are a serious cause for concern.

'The OECD is right that money needs to be targeted at poorer pupils if we are to close the educational gap between the top and the bottom.

'That is why two years ago, the Conservatives proposed a plan for education reform with an explicit pupil premium attached to children from less well-off backgrounds.

'Labour has failed a generation of children which is why we need a Conservative Government that takes the necessary steps to remove this block on opportunity.'

Children's Minister Dawn Primarolo said: 'It is disappointing to see the UK rated so low for risky behaviours.'

But she added: 'We have introduced a number of initiatives to help teenagers and their families make informed decisions about their behaviour, including the plans to introduce statutory Personal, Sexual and Health Education (PSHE) lessons to equip young people with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to live healthy, safe, fulfilled and responsible lives.'

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — A French climber dubbed “Spiderman” for his ropeless ascents of some of the world’s highest skyscrapers finally scaled yesterday a Malaysian tower he had tried to ascend twice before, and was then arrested.

Alain Robert, 47, used the cover of pre-dawn darkness to avoid detection from security guards at the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, and reached the top floor in around an hour and 45 minutes.

“I did try twice to climb, and climbing to the top is one of my dreams. It’s a bit like a love story, not only about climbing the tallest building to make it official... but about completing something unfinished,” Robert told Reuters ahead of the climb.

Robert reached the top of a spire at the peak of Tower 2 of the iconic twin buildings which houses state oil firm Petronas, then climbed down to an observation platform before being led inside by security personnel.

A police official told a Reuters photographer that Robert was later arrested and is being held at a police station. It is not known whether he will be charged for anything.

Robert has climbed over 80 buildings around the world, including the Eiffel Tower, London’s Canary Wharf building, New York’s Empire State Building and Chicago’s Sear’s Tower.

In 2004 he fended off stormy weather to climb the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101, in Taiwan’s capital.

“As a young boy I was afraid of heights and lacked self confidence,” said Robert. — Reuters

The Frenchman known as Spider-Man for his uncanny ability to scale the world's tallest buildings yesterday climbed one of Earth's most iconic landmarks without safety equipment.

In the pre-dawn gloom Alain Robert dodged security guards to start his 88-storey ascent of Malaysia's famous Petronas Towers.

As the city woke up Robert was well on his way up Tower 2 of the 1,482ft building - his third attempt, after being ordered down from the 60th floor two years ago.

Yesterday, however, there was no stopping him.

After a tough vertical climb with no ropes the 47-year-old finally reached the tower's antenna, scaling a ladder for the final few metres to fearlessly stand at the top and raise his hands in jubilation.

Most visitors to the towers in Kuala Lumpar never make it past the 60th floor, where a connecting walkway joins the buildings giving tourists a dizzying view of the city below.

After a short celebration the Spider-Man, who has scaled more than 80 skyscrapers worldwide, including the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower and Taipei 101, made the journey earthward in a very different way.

Flanked by security guards and under arrest, he was whisked back to earth in a lift and promptly escorted to the police station wearing handcuffs - and a big grin.

Later in the day Robert appeared in court where he was fined 2,000 Ringit - about £350.

At 5ft 5in, he is short and light, which helps with his climbing. He also sometimes uses a bag of chalk powder to absorb sweat.

He suffered two serious accidents in 1982 - including a head-first 15 metre fall which left him in a coma for five days and with multiple fractures.

The married father-of-three rarely has permission from the authorities to attempt his dangerous exploits, so he has been arrested many times at the end of his climb.

Yesterday, Disney announced it had bought the rights to all Marvel Comic characters, for $4billion.

The move will bring characters such as Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and 'Toy Story.'
