Muflis berbogel

Si Muflis berbogel di Dubai
1426.blogspot.com
April 29, 2009

Ice shelf - bigger than Singapore, almost the size of New York City has broken

Antarctic ice shelf 'the size of New York' breaks up as global temperatures continue to rise
By Daily Mail Reporter

An area of the Antarctic ice shelf the size of New York City has broken into icebergs after the collapse of an ice bridge blamed on global warming, scientists said.

'The northern ice front of the Wilkins Ice Shelf has become unstable and the first icebergs have been released,' Angelika Humbert, glaciologist at the University of Muenster in Germany said.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf

The Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica pictured on the 27th April, 2009. Icebergs covering 270 sq miles have broken off this month

European Space Agency satellite images of the shelf show 270.3 sq miles of ice have cracked up in recent days.

Nine other shelves - ice floating on the sea and linked to the coast - have receded or collapsed around the Antarctic peninsula in the past 50 years.

The trend is widely blamed on climate change caused by heat-trapping gases from burning fossil fuels, according to David Vaughan, a British Antarctic Survey scientist .

The Wilkins shelf has already shrunk by about a third from its original 16,000 sq kms when first spotted decades ago, such thick ice would take at least hundreds of years to form.

Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula have warmed by up to 3C this century.

Shelf

The loss of ice shelves does not raise sea levels significantly because the ice is floating and already mostly submerged by the ocean.

But the big worry is that their loss will allow ice sheets on land to move faster, adding extra water to the seas.

Wilkins has almost no pent-up glaciers behind it, but ice shelves further south hold back vast volumes of ice.

The Arctic Council, grouping nations with territory in the Arctic, is due to meet in Tromsoe, north Norway, to debate the impact of melting ice in the north.

Human Traffickers & The 'Police'

'I Worked For Human Traffickers'

40 Arrested in Police Operation ‘Tara’

"The police officer himself drove the car while the trafficker sat next to him. They took us to the same place that we had been kept before. After leaving us there, the police left, after receiving 2,000 ringgit from the traffickers."

by Kyaw Min Htun, Radio Free Asia

Here, Ko Wunna speaks to RFA Burmese service reporter Kyaw Min Htun about his experiences over three months working for a trafficking gang in the region in and around northern Malaysia's Kedah province, which borders Songkhla and Yala provinces in Thailand. He reveals that illegal migrants who don't come under the aegis of one gang are vulnerable to worse exploitation by others.

The Malaysian government has recently pledged to investigate claims made by many other Burmese like Ko Wunna.

"I was arrested [by Malaysian immigration authorities] on Nov. 15, 2008 and was sentenced to jail for two months and one stroke of the lash. I was released on Jan. 2, 2009.

After I was released from prison, the Thai human traffickers [to whom Ko Wunna says he was then sold by immigration authorities] told me to buy myself 'back in' [to work in Malaysia] from the border town of Changlun. But they wanted 2050 ringgit (U.S. $570) to buy myself back in.

I couldn't give them that much money. Those who could pay were able to leave [the trafficking gang]." "Seven of us were left behind. We told them that we would work our way out. But they would not accept it. They said if we could not pay we would be sold to an Indonesian boat under a five-year plan. What we heard about this five-year plan was that if we were unable to work, they would kill us, beat us to death.

We were afraid, so we escaped in the night. The traffickers and their Thai boss chased us. We fled into the forest." "In the morning we saw a tea shop and asked for help. The people in the tea shop asked what nationality we were. We told them we were from Burma. They said we should contact the police. We thought about it. The traffickers chasing us had iron rods and were closing in on us. They also had motorcycles and if we crossed the street they would have tried to hit us with their cars. And if we were caught by the Thais we knew we would be dead.

So we decided it would be better to be arrested, so we surrendered to the police." Police 'took money from traffickers' "The police told us to wait while they telephoned their officer in charge. The police told us to sit and wait at the tea shop.

While we were waiting the police officer arrived. But it seemed that the police officer and the traffickers had done business in the past, because one of the traffickers came along with the police officer. They told us to get into the car. The police officer himself drove the car while the trafficker sat next to him. They took us to the same place that we had been kept before."

"After leaving us there, the police left, after receiving 2,000 ringgit from the traffickers. There were four traffickers. They kicked us with their boots. Later three more of them arrived with a gun and a metal chain. They hit us, but not on our faces where the injuries could be seen. They also used knuckle-dusters to hit us on our bodies."

"After we were caught again, the price [to leave the gang] went up to 3,000 ringgit. They said that if we did not pay the 3,000, the Thai bosses would cut our legs off as an example to the others... I was concerned so I contacted my home, but they were also in a tight situation in terms of money. So I did not ask for help from them again."

Ordered to beat new arrivals

"There was no way I could pay the money they asked for. So they told me to work for the payment. I agreed and did what they told me to do. After that they did not look after the new arrivals, they just kept them in that big house with just me looking after the new arrivals ... The traffickers gave me a phone, a book, and a ball-point pen. I had to register their names, their destination, and the phone numbers the new arrivals were calling. Those who could pay the money were brought forward first."

"The traffickers first showed me how to deal with the new arrivals. If they could pay 2,500 ringgit they were allowed to make the telephone call. If they could not pay, or if they said they would pay at the end of the month or later, I was told to hit them across their faces. Since they asked me to hit them, I had to do it." "It was not easy, as I myself had gone through the same fate in the past. But I had to hit them because if I did not do as I was told they would turn against me.

So I had to hit them a bit in front of the trafficker. But after the traffickers had left, I would apologize to the new arrivals. I told them that I would have to hit them, kick them, and treat them roughly in front of the traffickers, but that I was not really like that. And I asked them to understand my situation. They understood, as all of us were Burmese."

Perdana Menteri baru ada “task force” (jawatankuasa bertindak) untuk meneruskan perbincangan tentang penyatuan Melayu ni dengan PAS - Wrote Reme from Temasik.

Original Posting

PAS will join Barisan Nasional in June 2009. After it’s pact with other opposition parties had created history, PAS is ready to undress its opposition uniform once again.

Scary? Maybe. Betrayed? Yes.

I received an sms from a buddy in Singapore that later lead me to double-check his query with another buddy in KL.

I was told “everything is on track bro”.

But why June? Perhaps PAS members know better.

Meanwhile I found this piece from Malaysia Kini,

And I counter check with Harakahdaily and found this interview with Haji Hadi by Khairul Azlam Mohamad,

Question: Tapi Dato’ Seri, masih ramai orang yang tidak faham termasuk ahli-ahli PAS sendiri?

Answer: Inilah masalahnya. Saya tarik balik sehingga orang kita faham betul-betul.

Will PAS members understand it by June?

Nevertheless, it will certainly be in June.

Brutus the 800lb grizzly bear

Can I kiss the bride? Meet the 800lb grizzly bear who really is a man's best friend
By Debra Killalea

Most animal lovers would be happy to have a dog, or even a cat as their constant and loyal companion.

But naturalist Casey Anderson has taken that a step further and adopted an 58-stone grizzly bear called Brutus, who he has raised since birth.

The pair are inseparable and are so close that when Anderson married Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actress Missi Pyle in August last year, the bear stood in as best man.

Brutus

Naturalist Casey Anderson is so close to 800-pound Brutus that when he wed actress Missy Pyle last year, the grizzly bear acted as best man

Brutus

Brutus and Anderson set out on a year documentary called Grizzly Expedition which chronicles the lives of Yellowstone Park's bears

In fact, the creature is so fond of humans that he has become an integral part of the family, and even has the occasional place at the kitchen table and has appeared in a move with Pyle.

And while most cynics might argue the pictures are the result of Photoshop technology, Anderson and National Geographic have vouched for their authenticity.

Brutus

The couple would never have dreamed of leaving Brutus out of their nuptials

'He's my best friend,' Anderson told Good Morning America. 'He gives me unconditional love.'

Anderson said the creatures were his passion and it was his aim to educate the public about how important it was to preserve their environment.

Brutus

Anderson insists grizzlys are misunderstood and aims to educate the public about the real nature of the creatures

Brutus

Anderson's relationship with Brutus began seven years ago when the cub was taken to an over-populated nature reserve and faced being destroyed

He added many people wrongly assumed that bears were blood-thirsty man eaters which in fact the opposite is true and they normally shun human contact.

'It's the biggest misconception. When you hear about a grizzly bear, it's because they have done something wrong.' Anderson said.

'We're trying to cure the myths, educate the public.'

He added there was a way of coexisting with these animals but that humans had to play by the rules.

800-pound grizzly bear Brutus

Anderson said it was his mission to raise awareness of the struggles bears face on a daily basis

Brutus

Anderson takes his then young cub out for a late-night stroll

He also insists the creatures are similar to humans in that they are intelligent, have personality, and according to him can even shed tears.

It is his passion for the creatures that sparked Anderson to set out on a year-long mission to chronicle the lives of Yellowstone National Park bears.

Together with National Geographic, Expedition Grizzly aims to dispel the negative stereotypes surrounding the bears and chart the impact humans have had on their environment.

In the documentary, which is due to air on National Geographic on May 3, Anderson lives among the bears, often in extreme conditions as he observes their behaviour.

He even eats some of the food they do as he observes their daily struggles throughout the seasons.

Mr Anderson, who created the Montana Grizzly Encounter animal sanctuary, said it was his friendship with Brutus that prompted him to take action on preserving the creature's futures.

The pair's unlikely friendship began seven years ago, when Anderson met Brutus in a wildlife park where the then cub was born.

The pair are so close they do everything together, including cooling off in the bath

Brutus

Too cool for pool: Brutus is allowed to roam and swim wherever he likes

The reserve suffered from over-population, and Brutus was destined to remain in captivity or be destroyed.

He adopted the orphaned cub and began the sanctuary so Brutus 'could act like a real bear.'

And while most partners might be put off by a third wheel in the relationship, the new Mrs Anderson would not have it any other way.

Little Brutus has become an integral part of the family and loves human contact

Brutus

Brutus is never left out and even joins in the Anderson family thanksgiving activities

The actress, who starred in Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, has also formed an unlikely relationship with the bear.

The pair are actually acting buddies after Brutus appeared in her hit film, Pretty Ugly People.

By nature, grizzly bears are intelligent and inquisitive creatures and usually have no interest in harming humans.

Brutus

The best friends take a much-needed break during filming

Anderson reveals bears, like humans, are intelligent and feel emotion and love

In rare cases when they do attack, they do so because they feel threatened, or a mother feels her cubs are under threat.

Grizzlies mostly consume vegetarian food such as berries and roots, but will eat what other animals have killed.

The animals have to eat 35 pounds of food daily and can weigh up to 1,200 pounds.

Firemen Dark Side

Firemen go over to the Dark Side: New helmet makes them look like Star Wars stormtroopers
By Fay Schlesinger

It looks like something out of Star Wars - but inside this futuristic helmet is a fireman.

Brigades across the country are buying the headgear which can stand heat of more than 1,000C, without the temperature inside going above 35C.

And in technology reminiscent of cartoon character Inspector Gadget, firemen can use a lever at the side of the helmet to pull down a gold-plated visor for extra protection.

Deja vu? A man models the new Gallet F1-SF firemen's helmet (L), and a Star Wars stormtrooper (R)

Torches are clipped to either side of the helmet, and speakers, microphones and cameras can be attached to allow firemen to stay in touch.

The £130 helmets are made in France by safety equipment experts MSA.

The new headgear provides protection all the way around a fireman's head, face and neck.

Helmet

The reinforced eye screen is designed to protect against flying objects, radiating heat and 'flash back' caused by explosions.

Padded chin straps, vented netting and a combination of soft and rigid foam make the helmets more comfortable than ever before.

Fireman's helmet

A side view of the Gallet F1-SF fireman's helmet. The F1 has been used by the Paris Fire Brigade since August 1985

Bosses at Suffolk Fire and Rescue are the latest to buy the Gallet F1-SF helmets in Britain. This month they bought 850 - one for every fireman in the Suffolk brigade. Each requires an individual fitting.

Fireman's helmet

Tradition: A firefighter models the well-known yellow helmet

Assistant chief fire officer Gary Phillips said: 'We did expect some comments from members of the public, especially when attending road traffic accidents because they resemble motorcycle helmets.

'But the tinted visors tend to be used for major fires and when someone is being rescued from a fire they don't tend to notice or care how futuristic their rescuer looks.

'Our firefighters are over the moon about the helmets. They're comfortable and safer than ever before, with full cranial protection. They're also better fitting and less likely to come off if a firefighter falls over.'

Ordinary firemen's helmets are currently made from heat resistant plastics.

Metal helmets were phased out early last century because of the danger of electrocution presented by collapsing electric cables.

Swine Influenza (Swine Flu)

themalaysianinsider.com

Key facts about Swine Influenza (Swine Flu)

NEW YORK, April 27 — Following are facts about Swine Flu that has just broken out in Mexico and the United States, creating fears of another pandemic.

Swine Flu

What is Swine Influenza?

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

How many swine flu viruses are there?

Like all influenza viruses, swine flu viruses change constantly. Pigs can be infected by avian influenza and human influenza viruses as well as swine influenza viruses. When influenza viruses from different species infect pigs, the viruses can re-assort (i.e. swap genes) and new viruses that are a mix of swine, human and/or avian influenza viruses can emerge. Over the years, different variations of swine flu viruses have emerged. At this time, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, and H3N1. However, most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

Swine Flu in Humans

Can humans catch swine flu?

Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (e.g. children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry). In addition, there have been documented cases of one person spreading swine flu to others. For example, an outbreak of apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin in 1988 resulted in multiple human infections, and, although no community outbreak resulted, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient.

How common is swine flu infection in humans?

In the past, CDC received reports of approximately one human swine influenza virus infection every one to two years in the US, but from December 2005 through February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine influenza have been reported.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?

No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

How does swine flu spread?

Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What do we know about human-to-human spread of swine flu?

In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalised for pneumonia and died 8 days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, the patient visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine.

In follow-up studies, 76 per cent of swine exhibitors tested had antibody evidence of swine flu infection but no serious illnesses were detected among this group. Additional studies suggest that one to three health care personnel who had contact with the patient developed mild influenza-like illnesses with antibody evidence of swine flu infection.

How can human infections with swine influenza be diagnosed?

To diagnose swine influenza A infection, a respiratory specimen would generally need to be collected within the first 4 to 5 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be shedding virus). However, some persons, especially children, may shed virus for 10 days or longer. Identification as a swine flu influenza A virus requires sending the specimen to CDC for laboratory testing.

What medications are available to treat swine flu infections in humans?

There are four different antiviral drugs that are licensed for use in the US for the treatment of influenza: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir. While most swine influenza viruses have been susceptible to all four drugs, the most recent swine influenza viruses isolated from humans are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. At this time, CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses.

What other examples of swine flu outbreaks are there?

Probably the most well known is an outbreak of swine flu among soldiers in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976. The virus caused disease with x-ray evidence of pneumonia in at least 4 soldiers and 1 death; all of these patients had previously been healthy. The virus was transmitted to close contacts in a basic training environment, with limited transmission outside the basic training group. The virus is thought to have circulated for a month and disappeared. The source of the virus, the exact time of its introduction into Fort Dix, and factors limiting its spread and duration are unknown. The Fort Dix outbreak may have been caused by introduction of an animal virus into a stressed human population in close contact in crowded facilities during the winter. The swine influenza A virus collected from a Fort Dix soldier was named A/New Jersey/76 (Hsw1N1).

Is the H1N1 swine flu virus the same as human H1N1 viruses?

No. The H1N1 swine flu viruses are antigenically very different from human H1N1 viruses and, therefore, vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection from H1N1 swine flu viruses.

http://tobyinkster.co.uk/blog/2008/01/17/pork-etc/files/pork_etc_small.png

Swine Flu in Pigs

How does swine flu spread among pigs?

Swine flu viruses are thought to be spread mostly through close contact among pigs and possibly from contaminated objects moving between infected and uninfected pigs. Herds with continuous swine flu infections and herds that are vaccinated against swine flu may have sporadic disease, or may show only mild or no symptoms of infection.

What are signs of swine flu in pigs?

Signs of swine flu in pigs can include sudden onset of fever, depression, coughing (barking), discharge from the nose or eyes, sneezing, breathing difficulties, eye redness or inflammation, and going off feed.

How common is swine flu among pigs?

H1N1 and H3N2 swine flu viruses are endemic among pig populations in the United States and something that the industry deals with routinely. Outbreaks among pigs normally occur in colder weather months (late fall and winter) and sometimes with the introduction of new pigs into susceptible herds. Studies have shown that the swine flu H1N1 is common throughout pig populations worldwide, with 25 per cent of animals showing antibody evidence of infection. In the US studies have shown that 30 per cent of the pig population has antibody evidence of having had H1N1 infection. More specifically, 51 per cent of pigs in the north-central US have been shown to have antibody evidence of infection with swine H1N1. Human infections with swine flu H1N1 viruses are rare. There is currently no way to differentiate antibody produced in response to flu vaccination in pigs from antibody made in response to pig infections with swine H1N1 influenza.

While H1N1 swine viruses have been known to circulate among pig populations since at least 1930, H3N2 influenza viruses did not begin circulating among US pigs until 1998. The H3N2 viruses initially were introduced into the pig population from humans. The current swine flu H3N2 viruses are closely related to human H3N2 viruses.

Is there a vaccine for swine flu?

Vaccines are available to be given to pigs to prevent swine influenza. There is no vaccine to protect humans from swine flu. The seasonal influenza vaccine will likely help provide partial protection against swine H3N2, but not swine H1N1 viruses.

Mat Rempit Terrorist!

Fear and loathing of Mat Rempit
Pedigree!!! Pedigree!!! Mah Gawd Mah Gawd!!!

(THE STAR) - Many people detest the Mat Rempit because of crimes associated with this group of bikers, and people are now incensed as they are getting more brazen.

Just last Thursday, some 20 Mat Rempit surrounded Kattryn Eng’s 23-year-old daughter, who is deaf and mute, at a petrol kiosk in Subang Jaya at 7am.

They slapped and kicked her daughter before running off with her bag, in the presence of other patrons and attendants.

“My daughter could not even call for help. I am really devastated that such an incident could happen. When my husband brought my daughter to the police station, there were two other parties making similar reports,” said Eng, 57, a travel agent. (Read Eng’s account in the letters page – N30.)

She considers the Mat Rempit a “dangerous nuisance” and insisted that police act before this group became even more daring.

Student T. Selvesvaran, 21, encountered a group of 20 Mat Rempit in Shah Alam six months ago.

“I was sending my friend home. While we were talking in the car, a man on a bike rode past. We thought nothing of it until a few minutes later, when he returned and shouted at me kau keluar sekarang! kalau tak, kau tengok! (come out now or else),” said Selvesvaran.

He immediately started his car to drive away and while doing so, grew alarmed as some 20 motorcyclists joined the man.

They began to hurl rocks as they chased after him.

Selvesvaran drove away as fast as he could and was thankful the Mat Rempit stopped giving chase after a while.

He did not report the matter to the police because he was fearful of retaliation by the group.

Business development executive Daniel Tan, 28, no longer parks by the roadside after encountering a group of menacing Mat Rempit two years ago.

“I parked my car at Old Klang Road early in the morning and got out for some fresh air after a night out with friends.

“A group of six men then approached the car. I thought they wanted to help me, but instead they attacked me without warning.”

One of them hit him on the head with a helmet while the rest started kicking him once he fell.

He added that the Mat Rempit even attempted to steal his car but failed when one of his friends, who was asleep in the car, woke up and fought back.

Tan quickly got into the car and drove away. The motorcyclists chased them for a while before giving up.

Tan needed seven stitches on the head. However, he did not lodge a police report because he doubted the police could do much.

Other recent cases of Mat Rempit attacks include the assault on a Filipina in Kelana Jaya by 15 rogue bikers and another in Kuala Lumpur where at least 40 of them attacked a housewife and her son.

TV slavery! Turn off your TV!

virtue

TV is a powerful weapon of mass deception.

A REPUBLIC OF VIRTUE

Azly Rahman
http://azlyrahman-illuminations.blogspot.com/2009/04/play-for-penanti.html

We are watching too much TV. We have way too many channels that disseminate a variety of propaganda, sell dreams and illusions, create false consciousness, discuss non-issues, fragment the self, and numb our creative and critical senses.

Our children are bombarded with thousands of images daily as they sit passively in front of the television set. Their brain cells are slowly being turned into miniature advertising billboards.

These billboards become field of dreams and consciousness, turning the self into whatever the producers of propaganda wish them to turn into. These brain cells are conditioned by the nano-technology in smart TV programming.

TV is a powerful weapon of mass deception. TV is the mother of inner battles in all human beings. It is slowly killing the mental capacity of our children to sustain reading and to engage in critical reflection. An uncritical mind is a fertile ground for mental colonisation. A mind, essentially, is a terrible thing to waste.

Print and broadcast media are powerful tools of propaganda. While many Malaysian parents struggle to have their children read well so that they may not be perpetually confused and brain dead, TV is rigorously producing more and more programmes that will make children have four eyes and no mouth. Their mind cannot sustain good reading.

How many TV channels are there in Malaysia to help baby-sit the children? How many hundreds of programmes are we watching weekly to turn us into scatterbrained people?

How many different lifestyles of the rich and famous are we exposed to, so that we may learn to become replicas of the stars of Hollywood and Bollywood? How many universities in Malaysia are teaching critical media analysis?

Selling them junk

The owners of the satellites are smiling from the heavens looking down at Malaysians opiated and stoned in front of the TV set. The mantra is this: Feed the masses with all the ads and sell them junk through TV programmes. Sell them dreams so that they will buy and buy and let the media control and create their lives.

Whoever controls TV gets to control storytelling. Whoever controls the station controls the means of producing mass propaganda. Whoever controls the government controls the means of controlling the minds of the people. It is a mind-control game.

We learn from TV programmes. We learn to have choices of what to buy and what to believe through the propaganda. One is made to have choices to believe what kind of information is to be funneled into one's brain and next what kind of reality to believe, based on those presented by TV.

Malaysians complain that they only read half a page of a book a year on average, but why not complain that more and more TV stations are sprouting racing with one another to produce more and more sophisticated junk.

Producers have their ideological biases in what they produce. They answer to profiteers. Whatever sells can and ought to be mass-produced. The more people watch the programme, the higher the ratings, the more expensive the advertising slot.

Producers are not interested in producing ‘truth’. They think they are depicting ‘reality’ and therefore we see ‘reality shows’ to exploit human gullibility.

What is Malaysian TV producing? Better programmes or better propaganda?

One is bombarded by split-second images that hits the brain and colonise the mind.

Watch a 30-second commercial when you're tired, and you will discover that you are not watching TV, but the TV is watching you and washing your senses with subliminal messages that makes propaganda artsy and scientific.

Cruel choices

TV provides cruel choices. One is glued to the set, armed with the remote control. Especially with satellite TV with those many channels, children become glued to the idiot box. Observe what will happen to society when we have more and more channels.

The brain cells get excited at the end of every good TV programme. If it's a game show, the self glued to the TV gets transported in time and space to participate in the illusion of winning and losing. If it's a soap opera, the self becomes the actor or actress in the story in the process of the imitation of life.

TV programmes provide hundreds of choices daily for one to engage in alternate-reality games.

In TV-land, democracy is about creating more and more money selling advertisements that will turn all of us into TV freaks and addicts of the idiot box. It is not about developing one's skills in stepping outside of society and looking at it like a crystal ball.

TV-land is the land of make-believe that is created to turn viewers into bodies that consume and continue to be consumed. It is a land of cut-throat culture industry that first positions humanity in front of the TV, bombards it with trillions of sound bytes and multi-coloured electronic images, and transforms it into wide-eyed consumers that will consume conspicuously. This is the strategy of those who owns TV stations and cable broadcast satellites.

Brilliant! But the goal is to profit from advertising, in the name of having choices in a democratic world of mass consumption, TV provides such democratic choices. Cable TV provides the most choices in the presenting of propaganda.

‘TV is producing us’

TV creates human beings. American idols create idols to be worshipped. The Malaysian Idol, a transmutation of the American programme creates the human self that is to be made into an idol to be further worshipped via tabloid, radio, and TV.

TV can turn the kampung boy or girl into a demi-god who will then be transformed into an idol - an icon, a walking and talking billboard, a symbol of protest, a sign and symbol of this or that, a spokesperson for this and that organisation that will pay the most, a mascot for a political party. All these are creations of the well-trained media brains behind TV programming.

Want to be a famous politician? Control the media. Have it glorify you. Want to last long? Control it for more than 20 years. Have it make you into an idol or an icon. Learn from despotic rulers.

In the creation of Malaysian Idol, people love to see others humiliated in the name of creating that one particular idol. The nation enjoys that; like the Romans enjoying the gladiator thrown into the arena. Then the movie star or the music star is created, TV addicts and TV freaks read junk tabloids to keep up with news of the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Children will forget the hero within themselves. Their hero will be outside of themselves. To be - is to be like somebody else.

One cannot live that lifestyle but one can certainly be identified with it. TV is thus watching what human beings watch and therefore recreates human beings that are consumed by these images controlled by people who want to turn us into consumers.

Politicians who control the media (print or broadcast media) are also controlling the process of producing propaganda. But first, the politician must buy the media so that he/she will be recreated, just like the Malaysian Idol is created.

See how the modern media works? Sublime and subversive. Imagine what 100 channels can do to the human mind. Imagine what they can do to society.

Those watching American Idol get stoned on other people's fame and fortune, just like those who watch Wheels of Fortune do not realise that they watch the game show to forget that they may be in a wheel of misfortune themselves.

TV is a clever mass producer of dreams. Dreams can be in English, Malay, Chinese, Tamil, Urdu or Arabic. Whoever is clever and has the skills to create, can become dream-merchants peddling dreams. Electronic dreams are sublime. They wash away sorrows of the real world.

Bollywood is an industry. Malaysians especially have been conditioned to love Hindustani movies because they have been around since the early days of TV. Many Malaysians are of the south Indian stock, and therefore Bollywood helps Malaysians get stoned glued to TV in the modern age.

Bollywood sells well. Soap operas are a great hit with Malaysian housewives because that's the time to be glued to advertisements. Soap operas make housewives and house-husbands cry a lot because of the power of subliminal seduction. Soap operas sell soaps so that consumers can have fresher dreams daily, in a world corrupted by realpolitik. But the best part is to turn viewers into happy and stoned consumers. While housewives and househusbands shed real tears, the producers and TV station owners shed crocodile tears.

Is this the meaning of life? Aren't we supposed to destroy idols and the Neon gods - and rediscover the ‘Self’ within?

Reality of TV

Without advertisements and governments there won't be media. Those who owns media gets to own the means of colonising other people's mind, including the minds of the producers.

Producers have to kowtow to the dictates of corporations and governments. Owners of TV stations have controlling interests in the government and vice versa. This is the picture of the interconnectivity of the production of truth and the truth of profit-making.

They are mental slaves in the production house of ideologies; whatever these ideologies may present themselves. They produce for environmental polluters, beer companies, credit card companies, electric companies, cartoon companies, and cigarette companies.

I am sure we know the relationship between advertising slots and TV programming. In the long run, these create good consumers and fewer good citizens that can think critically of the fate of society.

TV is can also be a good master and servant to governments; the more corrupt the government the more corrupt TV programming becomes.

All TV stations are ideological; they do not present the truth - they can never claim to present objective points of view, because these truths are funded by corporations and government. The biggest lie can get funded by the biggest corporate or governmental liars.

TV in a democratic country cannot necessarily be democratic. It is based on presenting seemingly democratic opinions but yet they are all well-crafted to make the audience feel that they are being presented with truth. Non-issues become issues. Villains become heroes. Anti-heroes die a million deaths. Reality is mediated by invented realities.

But is all TV useless?

Malaysian Reality Show

The best Malaysian TV is yet to come - full-length ‘live’ telecasts of the Malaysian parliamentary debates. This can be good for the nation. If we can have a machine to vote for the most presentable politician weekly, we would be on our way to teaching our children what political accountability means. Political accountability can contribute to higher levels of civic consciousness.

Weekly tallies of good intellectual performance, coupled with good track record to no-corrupt acts, and good non-tax-evasion record - all these will help TV viewers enjoy the political game-show and decide on which politician should stay or be axed out.

I think our elected officials are ready for Malaysian Parliamentary TV. It will be a good way to educate Malaysians, especially the younger generation, of the political process, of participatory democracy, of the ethics of politics, of the power of the political intellect, and of powerful rhetoric.

That will be the promising world of good TV. That will be reality TV, Unlike the news reporting we get these days. News reports are massaged truth. Documentaries are longer versions of massaged truth.

TV stations hire more and more good researchers to produce better and better massaged truths.

Al-Jazeera is a station of propaganda of the Qatar government. Fox News is the station of propaganda par excellence of corporate America. The same goes with Malaysian TV stations. They all produce massaged truths. They broadcast points of view that are politically correct. These are propaganda stations that destroy our journey through the stations of the soul.

The human mind is made to be fragmented by these alternate truths. In the long run, the mind creates the self that reproduces itself into a walking and talking "worldview that is shaped by propaganda".

With private and public TV, we are sucked into the world of false consciousness, of make-believe, and of other people's stories.

So essentially the human self cannot escape from being enslaved by ideologies. TV producers, owners, politicians, educators, parents and teenagers must learn how to recognise false consciousness and massaged truths.

But one must first switch off the idiot box and pull out the cable.

Parents, teachers, educators, TV producers, community leaders, politicians - I interrupt this essay with an important public announcement: read books, discuss big ideas, have meaningful conversations, destroys screen idols.

Buy books

To help children increase their capacity to think, I would suggest we unsubscribe to cable TV, switch off the channels, and begin a programme of TV-detoxification. This might be akin to a rehabilitation programme for TV addiction.

The new daily diet must be of books - good books of the various traditions and disciplines.

Reading is a special psycho-linguistic activity that helps the mind create images out of sounds, syllables, words, concepts, sentences, phrase, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, and other strategies designed to make the mind active - the very stuff that helps the brain create and imagine.

It trains the brain in a different way. It does not, like TV, make the brain docile and ready to be raped and subdued.

When the brain is subdued, the mind becomes colonised, and the body becomes a location for consumption. We become consuming bodies that are produced by TV advertising. Satellite owners will benefit. The aim of TV is to sell dreams, turning the life of economic beings into nightmares.

First tier media giants - AOL-Time Warner, Walt Disney, Bertelsmann, Viacom, AT&T, SONY, Vivendi Universal and Rupert Murdoch - will benefit. Hollywood and Bollywood will benefit.

Buy your child 100 books instead of subscribing to 100 channels. Have quiet reading times instead of living multiple realities created by TV. Get them to understand what it means to have their own stories, and to be makers of their own history rather that be turned into consumers manipulated by TV.

Kids grow smarter around books. Teach them what TV is trying to teach. Or better stilll -- teach them to speak up against injustices and how to transform the world. Teach them to become radical thinkers, armed with poetry and passion, reason and revolution.

But first, turn off that TV. For, the world created by television is too much for our children. They will grow old having four eyes and no mouth.

Hidangan Arak di Suria KLCC!

1malaysia: Hidangan Arak di Pertunjukan Fesyen di Suria KLCC!
kerabubersuara.blogspot

Assalamualaikum saudara saudari Muslimin Muslimat sekelian.

  1. Orang yang memerah arak ;
  2. Orang yang minta diperahkan arak ;
  3. Orang yang meminum arak ;
  4. Orang yang membawa arak ;
  5. Orang yang minta dihantarkan arak ;
  6. Orang yang menuangkan arak ;
  7. Orang yang menjual arak ;
  8. Orang yang makan harga arak ;
  9. Orang yang membeli arak ;

Insya Allah!

mahaguru!

Rape, beatings and bribery: Iraqi police out of control

Masked Iraqi police prepare for an operation to rescue hostages

The brief film is deeply disturbing, even in a country famed for its al-Qaeda beheading videos and sniper snuff movies. The young woman, evidently drugged, vomiting and occasionally calling for her mother, tries weakly to stop the grinning man in a white T-shirt and boxer shorts from pulling off her underwear.

She fails. The man, instructing the cameraman to shoot the scene with his mobile phone from various angles, rapes her.

That is not the only shocking aspect of the film, according to Jassim al-Bidawi, former Mayor of Fallujah and now a human rights activist. He has identified the rapist as an Iraqi police officer, and says that the cameraman is one, too. They are thought to have drugged the woman as she visited her husband in a detention centre in Ramadi. Since the rapist's uncle is a senior policeman in the city the attacker is all but untouchable, Mr al-Bidawi says.

In the desperate rush to drag Iraq back from civil war, sweeping powers were granted to its new security forces. Human rights workers, MPs and American officials now believe that they are all too often a law unto themselves: admired when they defeat terrorists but also feared for their widespread abuse of power.

n this vast and largely unaccountable security apparatus, with almost a million people in uniform, corruption is rife. One of the most common ploys is to arrest innocent people and then charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for them to be released.

Abu Aliya, 35, was arrested with 15 other men in a Baghdad park last September. They were having a picnic after a day of manual labour when a unit of Iraqi soldiers handcuffed and beat them, demanding to know whether they recognised any of the people on a list of suspected Shia militiamen. The men said that they did not. They were locked up and whipped with electrical cables to force them to confess to being militiamen.

After three months a soldier told them that they needed a lawyer. Fearing that they would never get out, they each paid $3,000 - a huge sum to day labourers earning about $10 a day - and were sent to court. The judge asked why they had been detained when there was no evidence, then dismissed the case.

“The Iraqi security forces are out of control,” Abu Aliya said. “If you quarrel with a simple soldier, even one out of uniform, he will arrest you and your family. This is happening everywhere, all the time.”

Muhammad, in his early twenties, was arrested in a raid on his west Baghdad neighbourhood in 2007. He says that he spent 18 months in jail, where men were dragged off every night for questioning, returning to overcrowded cells in the morning battered and semi-conscious. Muhammad lost several teeth during the beatings meted out to him and was hung by his arms until he consented to put a thumbprint on a document that he could not read because he was blindfolded. His family paid $800 and he was released, even though he had apparently confessed to a crime.

Sawsan al-Barrack, an official at the Ministry of Human Rights, said: “There are many cases of abuse of power coming to us, especially of police officers in temporary detention centres. There are many women complaining they are raped or beaten.”

In many cases rape is seen as a stain on family honour and the victim is killed. Mr al-Bidawi said that was believed to have been the fate of the young woman filmed by the Ramadi police officer.

According to tribal sources in Ramadi, the rapist in the film, who apparently recorded his crime to make his victim keep her mouth shut, was detained briefly before being mysteriously freed. He is believed to have fled to Syria.

Amel al-Qaadi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament's Integrity Committee, said that she had met a young male student who had been detained and had confessed to membership of a terrorist cell because his jailers threatened to rape him. “There were many others who told me they were actually raped at the headquarters of various security force units,” she said.

Ms al-Qaadi warned that random arrests were exacerbating the surge in violence. “Most current attacks on the armed forces are the results of earlier arrests by the security forces. Eventually they become terrorists because we forced them into it,” she said.

Azhar al-Samarrai, a Sunni MP from the Committee for Displaced Persons, said that, facing defeat at the hands of militias and terrorist groups, the US and Iraqi authorities hastily recruited “substandard people, with no education or moral values” into the security forces. Often the officers were former militiamen or insurgents. She said that the Government had been trying to weed out corrupt elements but was wary of destabilising security.
